Great Humor
A friend pointed me to this book back when I was in junior high and I've a few times borrowed it through Inter-Library Loan just to re-read. It is one of the funniest books I've ever read and certainly one of my all time favorites.

This Child's Gonna Live (Contemporary Classics by Women)
Published in Paperback by The Feminist Press at CUNY (August, 2002)
Authors: Sarah E. Wright, Jennifer Campbell, and Thulani Davis
Average review score:

A superbly written and heartrending tale
Set in a Maryland fishing village in the early 1930's, This Child's Gonna Live by Sarah E. Wright is the harshly candid story of Mariah Upshur, the African-American wife of a poor oysterman, and who is struggling to keep her family together despite smothering press of poverty and despair. This Child's Gonna Live is the superbly written and heartrending tale of a monumental effort for family survival under the harsh realities of rural poverty. Of special interest in this Feminist Press edition of an African-American literary classic is the inclusion of the Sarah E. Wright's essay, "The Writer's Responsibility".

This Is the Beat Generation: New York-San Francisco-Paris
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (05 November, 2001)
Author: James Campbell
Average review score:

Simply brilliant
I started reading this book with little prior knowledge of the beat movement and authors. I also didn't expect much from the book, thinking that it would probably be a rather academic piece of writing. And what a pleasant surprise it turned out to be! The book was so gripping that I finished it in a few days, reading long passages at a time. It covers the rise to prominence of the dramatis personae of the beat movement (focusing on Kerouac, Ginsberg and Burroughs), giving enough information on their backgrounds to facilitate an understanding of how this influenced them and their writing, but does not dwell on unnecessary minutiae in the process. All the information is presented in a concise and remarkably readable manner. The author points out the foibles of the beats, but is not too judgemental, leaving it to the reader to come to his own conclusions.

But the best thing about this book is the way the author links events and people in a witty, intelligent way without falling into the very beat trap of being pretentious. It can serve as an example to all authors wishing to write an intelligent, accessible work of non-fiction.

The Three Spinning Fairies: A Tale from the Brothers Grimm
Published in Hardcover by Dutton Books (March, 2002)
Authors: Lisa Campbell Ernst, Jacob Grimm, and Wilhelm Grimm
Average review score:

A Fairy Tale of a Lazy Little Girl Who Becomes a Princess
This is the story of a little girl who refuses to do any work - she would rather be catered to by her hard working mother. Lo and behold she manages to get in the queen's good graces with the help of a big old lie and needs the help of 3 fairies to get out of her predicament. The story is a twist on several familiar fairy tales - with a somewhat happy ending, although the little girl wouldn't say so. The moral? Those who work hard will be rewarded in the end, and the work itself can be its own reward. Lisa Campbell Ernst always has first rate illustrations which I love, and my daughter is always drawn to stories about princesses and fairies - so this book was an instant hit.

The Thunder Rolls (Crystal Creek, No 8)

:)
From the back...
Ken Slattery, foreman at the Double C, knows what he wants. He wants Nora Jones. But Nora already has a man in her life-her eight-year-old son, Rory. Besides, her ex-husband has threatened to kill any man who stakes a claim on her...and he's on his way home to Crystal Creek for the holiday weekend.

My opinion...
As foreman of the McKinney ranch, Ken has been mentioned several times in previous books. Nora, of course, is always waiting on half the town of Crystal Creek, at her mother-in-law Dottie's Coffee shop. Nora is afraid to get involved with any man after her disastrous marriage. Her ex-husband beat her both physically and emotionally. Nora is scared by the feelings that she has for Ken. Nora is also scared her ex-husband would hurt her or Ken if he ever found out they were involved. This was a wonderful story with a heart stopping ending. This was one of the better books in the Crystal Creek series.

Trapshooting With D. Lee Braun and the Remington Pros: A Remington Sportsmen's Library Book
Published in Paperback by Benjamin Co (November, 1911)
Author: Robert Campbell
Average review score:

Definitive photography of trapshooting
The best book on trapshooting I've read. Innovative photography was used to show the dynamics of trapshooting. The book is over 30 years old and still is the best text on the subject. The Remington Pros especially D. Lee Braun give great insight to the subject that is the number one shooting sport in the world.

A fantastic read!
Wow! I couldn't put it down. What a great yarn and a fantastic concept: a Western mystery and a time-shifting epic. You've got to read this one. The author obviously plumbs his extensive experience in law enforcement, and knows the New Mexico landscape like the back of his hand. You'll love his true-to-life characters. I'm waiting for the next installment, Jeff.
